U.S nonprofits are at risk of losing their nonprofit status if they fail to file federal tax forms by October 15, 2010:  Many small U.S. nonprofits have failed to take note of changes to US Internal Revenue Service regulations that require them to file annual reports with the IRS, even if their annual receits are normally less than $25,000.  The original May 17, 2010 deadline has passed but they may retain their nonprofit status without penalties if they file before October 15, 2010.   Organizations with higher annual revenues must file nonprofit corporation tax returns (Form 990EZ or Form 990) on an annual basis, and they also are at risk of loss of nonprofit status if they have failed to do so for a period of three or more years.  We offer our clients consultation services on how to comply with these regulations.  The list of organizations at risk of loss of their nonprofit status is available online at: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id+225889,00.html  Please contact us if you wish to retain a lawyer to assist with compliance in this area.
